KUALA LUMPUR, 17 September 2023 – In the face of unprecedented natural disasters, MERCY Malaysia and Media Prima are standing together, united in their commitment to providing vital assistance and relief to communities affected by the recent natural disasters in Morocco and Libya.
MERCY Malaysia and MERCY Humanitarian UK (MHUK) have launched the Morocco Earthquake Campaign and Libya Flood Relief Campaign aimed at providing assistance and relief to the affected populations in both countries. In a heartening display of compassion, Media Prima, as Malaysia’s leading and largest media group, supports MERCY Malaysia’s humanitarian mission in Morocco and Libya.
On 8 September 2023, Morocco was struck by a powerful earthquake that left an indelible mark of tragedy. The earthquake’s devastating impact has claimed the lives of over 2,900 individuals, injured at least 5,530 people, and left over 10,000 individuals feared to be missing.
On 10 September 2023, Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya, unleashing severe weather conditions characterised by strong winds, sudden heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding that severely affected multiple northeastern regions of the country. The flood in Libya has claimed over 2,000 lives, displaced 30,000 individuals, and left another 5,000 missing. The powerful storm damaged dams, inundated northeast Libya, destroyed homes, caused substantial damage, disrupted the road network, and severed communication lines.
Media Prima, Group Managing Director, Rafiq Razali, expressed Media Prima’s deep condolences and support for the cause, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the calamity that has resulted in the loss of lives, livelihoods, and damage to properties, with millions being left homeless in both countries. We will leverage our reach and platforms to raise awareness and support for this cause. We plead to all our generous citizens to support this humanitarian mission. Every donation counts.”

This collaboration follows the successful partnership between MERCY Malaysia and Media Prima for the Turkiye-Syria earthquake, which proved beneficial to the affected communities in both Turkiye and Syria.
